Two American soldiers captured by insurgents in Iraq last Friday have been found dead, their bodies reportedly showed signs of torture.

The chief American military spokesman in Baghdad, Major-Gen William Caldwell, yesterday confirmed that the bodies of the two missing soldiers were found on Monday night near Yusufieh, the town south-west of the capital near where the soldiers went missing after an insurgent attack.

The discovery was first reported by senior Iraqi military officials who said the two men, both privates from the 101st Airborne Division, had been tortured before being killed.

They were named as Thomas Lowell Tucker, 25, and Kristian Menchaca, 23.

Gen Caldwell said the two bodies had been booby-trapped and bombs had to be defused before they could be recovered.

An Islamist website claimed they had their throats cut by the successor to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the leader of al-Qa'eda in Iraq.

American officials in Baghdad last night said they were taking seriously the internet statement that the men had been killed on the orders of Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, but had no way of confirming the claim.

"We bring good news to the nation of Islam from the battlefields," the Islamist website said.

"Rejoice that God's verdict against the two captive crusader parasites has been carried out by having their throats slit."

The statement was issued in the name of the Mujahidin Shura Council, an umbrella group of Islamist factions that includes al-Qa'eda in Iraq.

Al-Muhajer was named as the successor to the most wanted man in Iraq, the local al-Qa'eda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, after the latter was killed in an American operation on June 7.

Gen Caldwell said that during the search for the soldiers by more than 8,000 US and Iraqi troops another senior al-Qa'eda leader, Mansour Suleiman Mansour, was killed.
